Kure Moss (Arizona 2019), Beijing (2021), Surprise (2022) — lithium-ion battery energy storage (BESS) fires frighten fire brigades. This isn't a classic fire: thermal runaway cascades, can reignite days later and produces explosive gases. NFPA 855 (2023 edition) is the first comprehensive BESS standard. Here we cover the runaway mechanism, UL 9540A test levels, separation distance and sprinkler effectiveness.

What Is Thermal Runaway?

Above 80-90 C a Li-ion cell triggers a chain reaction:

  1. SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interphase) decomposes (80-120 C)
  2. Electrolyte vaporizes, internal pressure rises (120-180 C)
  3. Separator melts, internal short circuit (180-250 C)
  4. Cathode releases oxygen (250+ C), climbs to 600 C
  5. Propagates cell-to-cell

Released gases: H2, CO, CH4 and hydrofluoric acid (HF). HF is toxic; firefighter PPE is specialized.

NFPA 855 Framework

Chapter 9 commercial, Chapter 10 residential, Chapter 14 outdoor BESS. Key constraints:

UL 9540A Test Levels

BESS products are tested per UL 9540A (Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation) — four levels:

NFPA 855 Chapter 4.1.1.3 allows relaxed spacing for products that pass UL 9540A.

Sprinkler and Fire Suppression

Water cannot extinguish Li-ion fire — but it cools adjacent cells. NFPA 855 Chapter 9.6:

Alternatives: water mist, high-pressure CO2 inerting — clean agent alone is insufficient.

Ventilation and Deflagration Control

Gases (H2, CH4) pose explosion risk in BESS rooms:

Turkey and Project Practice

Solar+BESS hybrid plants are growing in Turkey. BYKHY has no dedicated article, but EPDK's technical spec indirectly references NFPA 855. Project tips:

  1. Request UL 9540A report PDF from the BESS vendor
  2. Architectural layout: outdoor shade/chiller for hot climates (40+ C)
  3. Plan long-duration water reserve (60 min) for sprinkler
  4. ITM: annual thermal imaging plus BMS log review
  5. Coordinate with AFAD/fire brigade on Li-ion specific training
