The first two minutes of a fire are critical. Before sprinklers activate and before the fire department arrives, the only tool to knock down a small flame is the portable fire extinguisher. NFPA 10 details type, capacity, placement, and maintenance. A practical field guide below.
Fire Classes
- Class A: Paper, wood, textile. Water, ABC dry chemical.
- Class B: Flammable liquid (gasoline, solvent, oil). CO₂, BC dry, AFFF.
- Class C: Electrical. CO₂, ABC dry (no water).
- Class D: Metal (magnesium, lithium). Special dry chemical.
- Class K: Cooking oil (kitchen). Wet chemical.
Rating System
The label (e.g., "4A:80B:C") gives per-class capacity:
- A rating: Class A capacity (1A = specific wood crib)
- B rating: Class B area ft² (80B = 80 ft² flammable liquid)
- C rating: Electrical safety (non-conductive)
Typical office: 4A:80B:C (6 kg ABC dry).
Travel Distance
NFPA 10 maximum path to nearest extinguisher:
- Class A Light Hazard: 75 ft (23 m)
- Class A Ordinary: 75 ft
- Class A Extra: 50 ft
- Class B: 50 ft (fuel storage), 30 ft (fryer)
- Class K: 30 ft
Placement
- Visible and accessible
- Top of extinguisher ≤ 1.5 m from floor (≤ 18 kg)
- Heavy (>18 kg): ≤ 1.07 m
- Near exits (quick access + visibility)
- Beside fire alarm panel typical
Maintenance Frequency
- Monthly visual: Pressure gauge, seal, physical damage. Non-certified staff can do it.
- Annual service: Certified technician, internal check.
- 6-year service: Cylinder opened, powder replaced, repair check.
- 12-year hydrostatic test: Cylinder pressure test (5 or 12 years depending on type).
Common Problems in Turkey
- Expired units: 6- and 12-year overdue, still hanging.
- Gauge in red: Unnoticed for years.
- Behind desks: Unreachable.
- Only present at inspection: Moved back to storage after audit.
Conclusion
Extinguishers are cheap but life-saving. Right type, right place, proper maintenance — a big difference in the first two minutes. NFPA 10 disciplined in the field would catch half of restaurant fires at the stove.
