If sprinkler pipe breaks during an earthquake, water damage — not fire — becomes the threat. Beyond structural damage, fire protection itself is lost. NFPA 13 Chapter 18 defines seismic design for sprinkler systems. Critical in Turkey's active seismic belt. An engineer's view of seismic protection below.

Earthquake and Sprinkler Systems

NFPA 13 Chapter 18 Requirements

Mandatory for seismic zone III+ (Turkey zones 1-2):

Sway Brace Design

Two bracing types:

Flexible Coupling Use

Turkey Seismic Zones

Turkey Seismic Zone Map (TBDY 2018); five zones:

Turkey's fire code doesn't explicitly mandate seismic design; NFPA 13 is applied when referenced. A significant gap.

Lesson from Feb 6, 2023

After the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, sprinkler pipes broke in many malls, hospitals, and hotels. No fire, but water damage followed. Systems without seismic protection drained. This experience shows seismic bracing must become mandatory in Turkey.

Test and Acceptance

Common Mistakes

  1. No sway bracing: Missing even in new Turkish projects.
  2. Wire ties instead of braces: Non-UL improvisation.
  3. Flexible coupling missing: Guaranteed break at expansion joint.
  4. Too few riser clamps: Vertical pipe sways.

Conclusion

Earthquake + fire together are Turkey's biggest risk. Sprinkler designs without seismic protection fail during quakes. NFPA 13 Chapter 18 paired with TBDY-compliant bracing should become mandatory in Turkey's building code. The engineer must close this gap at the design stage.
