Cinemas, theaters and concert halls are Assembly occupancy (NFPA 101 Chapter 12/13). High density, darkness, alcohol and visual distance complicate egress. Theaters with 500+ seats require a proscenium fire curtain, adequate exit width and multi-directional access.
Assembly Occupancy Classes
- A-1 Small: <300 - small cinema, conference room
- A-2 Medium: 300-1,000
- A-3 Large: >1,000 - large theater, concert hall
- Sprinkler mandatory for all A occupancies (NFPA 13)
Exit Width Calculation
- Doors: 5 mm/person (NFPA 101 Table 7.3.4.1.1)
- Stairs: 7.6 mm/person
- Example: 1,000-person theater main exits: 1,000 × 5 = 5,000 mm total
- Minimum: 915 mm per door
- Distribute: multiple doors so worst-case loss doesn't stall egress
Travel Distance
- A-1/A-2: 60 m (sprinklered), 45 m (non-sprinklered)
- A-3: 75 m (sprinklered)
- Dead-end corridor: max 6 m
- Common path: max 6 m to end of seat row
Proscenium Fire Curtain
- Fire curtain: NFPA 80 - 1-hour rating
- Activation: smoke detector + manual release, gravity drop
- Speed: 30 s max drop time
- Material: asbestos prohibited - glass fiber or mineral wool
- Stage sprinklers: OH2, 2 m spacing
Emergency Lighting and Signs
- Emergency light: 10 lux at floor, 1.5-hour battery
- Exit sign: green 'EXIT' 2.4 m above doors
- Floor-level marker: photoluminescent strip visible under smoke
- Announcement: EVC Emergency Voice Communication
