The large plants in Ceyhan, Yarımca and Bandırma supply most of Turkey's fertilizer output of roughly 6 million tonnes a year. Their core products are fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate (FGAN), calcium ammonium nitrate with 27% nitrogen (CAN 27) and NPK compound fertilizers. The 2013 explosion at a fertilizer store in West, Texas killed 15 people; since then nobody on site should treat this material as “just another fertilizer”. NFPA 400 treats ammonium nitrate as a Class 2–3 oxidizer and mandates storage limits, separation from organic materials and fire protection.
Ammonium Nitrate (AN) Chemistry
- Formula: NH4NO3, 80 g/mol
- Decomposition: Begins at about 170 °C
- Explosion threshold: Can self-detonate at about 250 °C
- FGAN: Fertilizer-grade AN
- TGAN: Technical-grade AN, used to make explosives
NFPA 400 Limits
- Class 3 oxidizer: Pure AN on its own falls into this class
- Maximum pile: 2,700 t
- Separation: 15 m between piles
- Separation from organics: No oil, fuel or wood in the same area
- Packaging: 50 kg polyethylene (PE) bags
Fire Protection
- Sprinklers: 20.4 L/min/m² density in oxidizer storage
- Copious water: The aim is to cool and stop decomposition, not to smother
- Dry chemical: Limited effect; does not stop decomposition
- Foam: Ineffective; AN supplies its own oxygen, so smothering does not work
- Floor: Non-absorbent concrete is mandatory
Major Incidents
- West (Texas) 2013: 15 dead, 270 t FGAN
- Beirut 2020: 220 dead, 2,750 t AN
- Oppau 1921: 561 dead, 4,500 t
- Toulouse AZF 2001: 31 dead
- Tianjin 2015: 173 dead, mixed chemical warehouse
Plants in Turkey
- Ceyhan plant: 700,000 t AN capacity
- Yarımca plant: 1.4 Mt annual output
- Bandırma plant: 700,000 t
- Samsun plant: Mainly NPK compound fertilizers
- Port of Mersin: Main entry point for AN imports
