A water curtain is a vertical sheet of water formed by open nozzles. The most commonly misunderstood point is this: a water curtain is not a fire compartment on its own, and does not replace a fire-resisting wall.

The water sheet absorbs heat but is permeable to gas. Smoke and flammable gases can pass through the curtain. For life safety, therefore, a curtain is not enough to treat an escape route as protected.

Two typical uses

1. Cooling glazed facades and partitions

A non-fire-rated glazed partition or facade can hold its integrity longer when cooled by a properly designed water curtain. That is a performance-based design decision: it must be supported by the glass type, the fixing detail, the nozzle layout and flow test data. You cannot look at a standard table and declare that adding a curtain has created a compartment.

2. Opening protection

At openings that cannot be closed — conveyor penetrations, loading doors, atrium edges — it is used to reduce radiation and delay ignition on the far side. Again, this is exposure protection, not compartmentation.

Authority approval is essential. Treating a water curtain as a substitute for a fire-resisting element is only possible through a performance-based design supported by test or calculation data and approved by the authority having jurisdiction. In Turkey that depends on acceptance by the fire authority approving the project.

Design criteria

  1. An unbroken sheet. Nozzle spacing is chosen so no gap remains in the curtain; the spray cones of adjacent nozzles must intersect.
  2. Full wetting of the surface. For glass cooling, water must run over the entire face of the glass, starting at the top edge and forming a film rather than breaking into droplets.
  3. Adequate duration. The curtain must run for the required resistance period of the protected element, and the water supply is sized accordingly.
  4. Sensitivity to air movement. Ventilation or smoke extraction can deflect the curtain, and the design must allow for it.
  5. Drainage. The curtain runs continuously; the system does not work until floor drainage and standing water are solved.
  6. No obstructions. Beams, ducts and signage along the curtain line break up the water sheet.
