Turkey has 750,000 KYK (state dormitory agency) beds plus around 400,000 private dormitory beds, and the campus dormitories of large universities are part of the picture. A typical dormitory has 4-8 floors, 500-2000 students and mostly 4-person rooms. The NFPA 101 dormitory occupancy calls for a 15 m dead-end limit in corridors, two exits from every floor, quick response (QR) sprinklers, a smoke detector in every room and a travel distance of no more than 61 m from the room door to an exit.

Dormitory Hazards

  • Sleeping occupants: a sleeping student notices the alarm late.
  • Electrical appliances: heaters and kettles are common in rooms.
  • Smoking: smoking in bed is a classic ignition source.
  • Doors left open: with the room door open, smoke spreads along the whole corridor.
  • Seton Hall 2000: 3 students died in a dormitory fire in the USA.

Means of Egress under NFPA 101

  • Travel distance: in a sprinklered dormitory, no more than 61 m (200 ft) from the corridor door of a room (suite) to the nearest exit (NFPA 101-2024 28.2.6.3.3.1) and no more than 38 m (125 ft) within a room/suite to the corridor door (28.2.6.2).
  • Dead-end corridor: limited to 15 m.
  • Two exits: two independent exit stairs on every floor.
  • Corridor width: no less than 1.1 m clear.
  • Room door: 0.81 m clear opening and self-closing.

Sprinkler Protection

  • NFPA 13R: applicable to dormitories of up to 4 stories.
  • NFPA 13: the full standard is required above 4 stories.
  • QR sprinklers: their low response time index (RTI) buys time for sleeping students.
  • Typical room density: a design value of 4.1 mm/min (L/min/m²) is adequate in practice (the NFPA 13 Light Hazard value).
  • Corridor: protection with at least 2 sprinklers.

Detection and Alarm

  • Room smoke detectors: photoelectric type preferred.
  • Corridor: ionization detectors give fast detection of flaming fires.
  • Audible alarm: 75 dBA at the pillow is needed to wake a sleeping student.
  • Visual alarm: ADA-compliant strobes are mandatory in rooms for hearing-impaired occupants.
  • CO detectors: required in rooms with boilers or fuel-burning appliances.
