Underground coal mines are among the world's most dangerous workplaces. Methane (firedamp) released from seams is explosive at 5-15 percent; coal dust triggers a secondary blast at a 40 g/m3 LEL. Soma 2014 (301 miners) was Turkey's worst industrial disaster. The core NFPA standard for fire prevention and control in coal mines is NFPA 120; NFPA 122 covers metal/nonmetal mining and metal mineral processing facilities (NFPA 13-2025 Chapter 2 and 27.21–27.22). In the field, these are read together with Turkish mining law and MSHA rules.
