Modern commercial ship engine rooms favor human-safe inert gases like IG-541 (Inergen) over CO2. A 52 percent N2 + 40 percent Ar + 8 percent CO2 blend at 37.5 percent design concentration reduces O2 to 12.5 percent. NFPA 2001 and SOLAS II-2 Reg 10 apply together. MSC/Circ.668 and IMO MSC.1/Circ.1456 are the regulations.
