Yacht Marina Fire Protection: NFPA 303 Pier and Fueling

Large marinas with 650, 580 and 320 berths drive a billion-dollar tourism business. Yachts carry diesel and gasoline, LPG galleys and Li-ion batteries. NFPA 303 requires pier hydrants at 38 m spacing, an emergency shut-off at fuel dispensers and Class B fire extinguishers.

Marina Fire Hazards

• Fuel: Gasoline Class IA and diesel Class II together
• LPG galley: Daily propane use on board
• Li-ion: Boat battery packs up to about 100 kWh
• Electrical: 230 V shore power
• Fabrics: Awnings and mainsails, preferably flame-retardant (FR) fabric

NFPA 303 Hydrants

• Pier hydrant: Max 38 m spacing
• Flow: 1,900 L/min main line, 945 L/min auxiliary line
• Standpipe: Class III standpipe for long yachts
• Hose: 30 m long, 1.5 inch diameter
• Fire boat: Recommended for large marinas

Fueling

• Dispenser: UL 87 listed
• Emergency stop: 6 m spacing
• Extinguisher: Class B, 20 lb
• Spill kit: Adsorbent boom
• Separation: 7.5 m from the fueling point

Shore Power

• IEC 60092: Marine standard for on-board electrical installations
• Amps: 16-32-63 A
• Residual-current protection (RCD/GFCI): Mandatory in marine installations
• Connector: IP67 marina type
• Boat side: Isolation transformer (also prevents galvanic corrosion)
