The February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes reminded Turkey of its seismic reality once again. Buildings collapsed, but even in surviving structures sprinkler pipes broke, pumps toppled and mains cracked. Structures that resisted the quake itself were left without sprinkler protection against the post-earthquake fire. At this intersection, NFPA 13 and the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBDY 2018) define the rules that keep sprinklers operational after an earthquake. This article approaches seismic bracing with the seriousness it deserves.

What Is Seismic Bracing?

Seismic bracing is a mechanical addition that forces the sprinkler pipe to move with the building's structural frame during an earthquake. The core purpose: prevent independent motion of the pipe and rupture at joints. NFPA 13-2025 Chapter 18 defines the details; the standard's term is "sway brace."

Three Types of Brace

Which Pipes Need Bracing?

NFPA 13 applies different rules based on pipe function and diameter:

Turkey's Earthquake Zones

The former Turkish earthquake zone map had 5 zones. According to the BYKHY Guide, the 2007 earthquake regulation was repealed by the Turkish Building Earthquake Code of 18.03.2018 (TBDY 2018), which has no earthquake zones; the BYKHY 96/6 condition for "first- and second-degree earthquake zones" now applies to buildings in earthquake design classes (DTS) 1, 1a, 2 and 2a. If you still use the old zones as a rough guide, a rough field mapping to the US Seismic Design Categories (A–F) is:

Former TR Seismic ZoneTypical PGANFPA 13 SDC EquivalentBracing Required

Zone 20.3-0.4gC-DFull bracing
Zone 30.2-0.3gB-CPartial bracing
Zone 40.1-0.2gA-BBasic bracing
Zone 5<0.1gAStandard hangers only

Flexible Couplings

NFPA 13 requires flexible couplings on 2½ in (65 mm) and larger piping so it can move with individual sections of the building (18.2.1): within 24 in (600 mm) of the top and bottom of risers, within 12 in (300 mm) above and 24 in (600 mm) below floors in multistory buildings, within 1 ft (300 mm) on both sides of concrete or masonry walls, and within 24 in (600 mm) of building expansion joints (18.2.4.1). Where piping of any size crosses building seismic separation joints, a seismic separation assembly is required (18.3.1). This lets two sections of the building sway in different directions without rupturing the pipe.

Most commonly forgotten locations in the field: (1) roof-to-wall junctions, (2) seismic joint crossings, (3) between building wings.

Pump and Water Tank Seismic Bracing

Not just pipes — equipment must also withstand earthquakes:

Four Common Mistakes in Turkey

  1. Relying only on hangers: Hangers carry vertical load; for seismic load NFPA 13 requires lateral and longitudinal sway bracing on mains (18.5.5, 18.5.6) and at least restraint on small branch lines (18.6).
  2. Skipping seismic separation: Pipes crossing seismic joints without a seismic separation assembly will almost certainly break in a major earthquake.
  3. Bracing to secondary structure: Connecting braces to suspended ceilings or non-structural elements is meaningless. Braces must attach to the primary structural frame (concrete beams and columns, main steel).
  4. No brace load calculation: The brace itself must be sized per listed design loads.

Conclusion

In a seismic country like Turkey, sprinkler system earthquake resistance is mandatory, not cosmetic. The 2023 earthquakes showed that in buildings that didn't collapse, if a fire started and the sprinklers failed, a second disaster began. NFPA 13 Chapter 18 and Turkey's TBDY 2018 must be considered together; the designer must treat seismic load with the same seriousness as structural load.
