Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM, CH2=CHCl) is a flammable carcinogenic gas/liquid used in PVC manufacture. LEL 3.6 percent, UEL 33 percent, flash point -78 C. Closed tank leaks quickly form explosive atmospheres. ATEX 2014/34/EU and NFPA 30 require explosion-protected design for VCM tanks, transfer pumps and piping.

Kst (deflagration index): 50 bar m/s (St1 class).

NFPA 68 venting: Av = (Kst × V^0.75) / (Pred × 1000) — a 100 m3 tank with Pred = 0.5 bar needs Av ~= 3 m2 vent area.
