What is the governing class rule in mixed commodity storage?

Where several commodity classes are stored together without adequate separation, the highest class present governs the design of the whole zone. This means a relatively small quantity of Group A plastics can escalate the entire area, because the design must cover the hardest credible fire scenario rather than an average one.

Can a clear aisle be used to separate different commodity classes?

Yes, but only if the aisle is genuinely clear and wide enough, typically at least 1.8 m, with no product stored in it and no equipment parked in it. In continuously operating warehouses aisles are frequently occupied in practice, which is why the governing class rule ends up applying on most e-commerce sites.

When is a fire wall needed rather than an aisle?

A fire wall is needed when you want genuinely independent designs on each side, particularly where one side holds Group A plastics and the other does not. It requires an appropriate fire rating, automatic-closing doors released on alarm, and a check valve in the sprinkler main between the zones.

How does mixed commodity affect the water demand?

Significantly. Because the governing class sets density, duration and hose allowance for the whole zone, escalating from Class 3 to Group A plastics can multiply the water demand and force a larger tank and pump. Deciding early whether to invest in separation is therefore a hydraulic decision as much as an architectural one.
