Why placement rules differ by standard and sprinkler type
The area a sprinkler protects depends on how its deflector spreads water and how quickly hot ceiling gas reaches it. NFPA 13, EN 12845 and FM Global DS 2-0 therefore give different numbers, with separate rules for standard spray (CMDA), sidewall, extended coverage (EC), CMSA and ESFR sprinklers. The calculator returns the values below with their clause or table numbers, or “not defined” where a standard has no rule.
- Spacing: maximum and minimum distance between sprinklers; the minimum stops the first sprinkler wetting its neighbours.
- Area per sprinkler: a second limit, independent of spacing; both must be met.
- Distance to walls: usually half the allowable spacing; NFPA 13 and FM DS 2-0 also require at least 4 in (100 mm).
- Distance below the ceiling: the heat-responsive element must sit in the hot ceiling layer.
- Clearance to storage: the minimum gap between deflector and top of storage.
Standard spray (CMDA): three standards side by side
Ordinary hazard, smooth unobstructed ceiling below 9.1 m (30 ft):
| Rule | NFPA 13-2025 · OH | EN 12845 · OH | FM DS 2-0 · HC-2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum spacing | 15 ft (4.6 m) — Table 10.2.4.2.1(b) | 4.0 m — Table 19 | 15 ft (4.6 m) — Table 2.5.2.3.1.1(b) |
| Maximum area | 130 ft² (12 m²) | 12 m² | 130 ft² (12.1 m²), at least 64 ft² |
| Minimum spacing | 6 ft (1.8 m) — 10.2.6.4.1 | 2 m — 12.3 | 7 ft (2.1 m) |
| To walls | at most S/2, at least 4 in — 10.2.6.2.1, 10.2.6.3 | at most 2.0 m — 12.4.1 | between 4 in and S/2 — Figure 2.5.2.3.2 |
| Below ceiling | deflector 1–12 in (25–300 mm) — 10.2.7.1.1.1 | deflector 75–150 mm where possible; at most 0.3 m (combustible) / 0.45 m (A1, A2) — 12.4.2 | thermal element 2–12 in (50–300 mm) for K ≤ K160 — Figure 2.5.2.3.3.4 |
| Clearance to storage | 18 in (450 mm) — 10.2.9.1 | 0.5 m — 12.1.2 | 3 ft (0.9 m) — 2.5.1.9.1 |
Under obstructed construction (beams, joists) NFPA 13 puts the deflector 1–6 in (25–150 mm) below the members and at most 22 in (550 mm) below the deck, or a sprinkler in every bay (10.2.7.1.2). EN 12845 uses the beam chart (Figure 10) or the bay rule (12.4.7). For deflector height against distance from a beam, use the beam rule calculator.
Sidewall sprinklers
A sidewall sprinkler throws water from the wall into the room, so the tables give spacing along the wall and room width separately. NFPA 13 allows 14 ft (4.3 m) and 196 ft² (18 m²) in light hazard under a noncombustible ceiling, and 10 ft (3.0 m) and 100 ft² (9.3 m²) in ordinary hazard; combustible finishes reduce the area (Table 10.3.3.2.1). The deflector sits 4–6 in (100–150 mm) below the ceiling (10.3.5.1.1.1). EN 12845 Table 20 gives 4.6 m and 17 m² for LH and 3.4 m and 9 m² for OH; rooms wider than 3.7 m need a second row, and above 7.4 m extra ceiling sprinklers. FM DS 2-0 generally accepts sidewalls only in HC-1 and HC-2, under flat, unobstructed ceilings up to 30 ft (9.1 m) (2.5.3.1.1); the K14.0EC (K200EC) horizontal sidewall may also serve HC-3 under its own rules (2.5.3.4).
CMSA and ESFR
Storage sprinklers have tighter spacing, but may sit further below the ceiling. In NFPA 13 the ESFR deflector is 6–14 in (150–350 mm) below the ceiling for K14, K16.8 and K28 pendents, 6–18 in (150–450 mm) for K22.4, K25.2 and K33.6 pendents, and 3–12 in (75–300 mm) for K14 and K16.8 uprights (14.2.9.1.1). For CMSA under unobstructed construction it is 6–8 in (150–200 mm) (13.2.6.1.1). EN 12845-2 Table 2 gives the maximum thermal element distance by K-factor (ESFR K200, K240, K400: 325 mm; K320, K360, K480: 425 mm), with the deflector at least 100 mm below the ceiling (5.1.3.5.2).
| Rule | NFPA 13 · ESFR | EN 12845-2 · ESFR | FM DS 2-0 · storage sprinklers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spacing | 8–12 ft (2.4–3.7 m); at most 10 ft (3.0 m) if the ceiling exceeds 30 ft (9.1 m) or storage 25 ft (7.6 m) | 2.4–3.7 m; at most 3.1 m if the ceiling exceeds 9.1 m | 8–12 ft (2.4–3.7 m); at most 10 ft (3.0 m) above 30 ft (9.0 m) |
| Area | 64–100 ft² (5.9–9.3 m²) | 6–9.3 m² | 64–100 ft² (6.0–9.3 m²) |
| Clearance to storage | 36 in (900 mm) — 14.2.11 | 1 m — 5.1.3.7 | 3 ft (0.9 m) — DS 8-9 2.2.6.1 |
Deflector or thermal element? NFPA 13 and EN 12845 measure to the deflector; FM DS 2-0 and EN 12845-2 Table 2 measure to the centreline of the thermal element (glass bulb or fusible link). The two figures differ by an amount that depends on the sprinkler (see the listing); the calculator states which one applies. FM DS 2-0 no longer says “CMSA” or “ESFR”; it calls them storage sprinklers, defined by K-factor and response.
Spacing versus area in a square layout
Maximum spacing and maximum area can rarely be used together. For ESFR, 3.7 m × 3.7 m gives 13.7 m² against a 9.3 m² limit; in a square layout the real limit is the square root of the area:
Ssquare = min(Smax; √Amax) = min(3.7; √9.3) = 3.05 mFor sprinkler numbers, use the sprinkler spacing and layout calculator; for ESFR suitability, the ESFR suitability checker.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far can a sprinkler be from a wall?
In NFPA 13 and FM DS 2-0, up to half the allowable spacing (NFPA 13 clause 10.2.6.2.1, FM DS 2-0 Figure 2.5.2.3.2), and both require at least 4 in (100 mm). EN 12845 takes the smaller of 2.0 m for a standard layout or 2.3 m for a staggered one and half the spacing; with open joists, open-faced buildings or combustible or metal external walls the limit is 1.5 m (clause 12.4.1).
How far below the ceiling should the deflector be?
For NFPA 13 standard spray sprinklers under unobstructed construction, 1–12 in (25–300 mm) (clause 10.2.7.1.1.1). EN 12845 asks for 75–150 mm where possible, and at most 0.3 m under combustible ceilings or 0.45 m under Euroclass A1/A2 ceilings where unavoidable (clause 12.4.2). For ESFR and CMSA the value depends on the standard and the K-factor; the calculator shows it for your selection.
When can sidewall sprinklers be used?
In NFPA 13, in light hazard under smooth ceilings, and in ordinary hazard under smooth flat ceilings where specifically listed and with the ceiling no higher than 30 ft (9.1 m) (clause 10.3.2). In EN 12845, in LH and OH under flat ceilings only; in HH only for corridors, cable ducts and columns, and never in OH storage areas or above suspended ceilings (clause 14.2.3). In FM DS 2-0, generally in HC-1 and HC-2 under flat, unobstructed ceilings up to 30 ft (9.1 m) (clause 2.5.3.1.1); the K14.0EC (K200EC) horizontal sidewall is also accepted in HC-3 under clause 2.5.3.4.
What clearance is needed between ESFR sprinklers and storage?
At least 36 in (900 mm) in NFPA 13 (clause 14.2.11), 3 ft (0.9 m) in FM (DS 8-9 clause 2.2.6.1) and 1 m in EN 12845-2 (clause 5.1.3.7). Enter the ceiling and storage heights and the calculator works out the remaining gap from the lowest permitted deflector (or, in FM and EN 12845-2, thermal element) position and the highest storage allowed.
